if the email client composer or online email composer is set to do such.
i believe, if you go back thru gmail account configuration, you will find
settings to send both or either. it has been too long from when i configured
my gmail accounts. it would be good for you to review them and have a better
understanding of what op has not done.
a main problem, which has brought all this about, is that there are too
many gmail *users*, and not enough who *use* gmail.
to clarify, *users* simply use gmail with out configuring.
those who *use* gmail, go thru entire configurations and set gmail to
"conform" to preferred ways of sending email.
for a better understanding of *bad html*, have a look at;
http://www.efn.no/html-bad.html
also, using google advanced search of;
email "bad+html"
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=email+"bad%2Bhtml"&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=100&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images
and
email "html=+bad"
http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&&sa=X&ei=53dfTJGbGsWqlAeiyrGZCA&ved=0CBQQBSgA&q=email+"html%3D%2Bbad"&spell=1
granted, google links will show you a 'p pot' full of hits, but after reading
first few links that are obvious from description, or first link,

no more so than thunderbird, and it does not 'yell' at you. ;)
