Via the system Shut Down popup, which I assume is the gold standard.
Closing the screen panel on the laptop has the same effect.

Some additional data, from pm-suspend.log

Fri Aug 27 05:54:37 PDT 2010: performing suspend
/usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions: line 259: echo: write error: Device or
resource busy

the referenced line is

do_suspend() { echo -n "mem" >/sys/power/state; }

/sys/power/state is writable by root, and the same result is obtained
on the command line.
