Thanks for the feedback. Here's where I'm at:
I installed system-config-display
If I plug the second monitor into the laptop before I boot, then it partially
works as is, if I open say a Konsole then it opens on the second screen.
However I cannot move my mouse to the second screen which makes it pretty
difficult to use te newly started konsole window.
So, I tried running system-config-display, I checked the boz for it to use dual
head but when I clicked OK I get this :
