changing default "movie player?"

            Ok, that offered a round about way to fix the problem. I'm
            sorry I did not provide all the details at first but I was
            frustrated and impatient when I wrote initially.

            I selected a saved "3g2" file from the XFCE file manager and
            it, unlike Thunderbird, allowed me to choose the method and
            make that method the default. After doing that Thunderbird
            also uses VLC as default! Hopefully that selection will
            survive rebooting?

            My daughter sent some video clips while kayaking yesterday
            and I wanted to view them quickly and comment. I saved the
            first one out of desperation but then she sent several more
            and the process got to be a bother ... I had other problems
            and my three year old great grand daughter wanting me to
            play ball with her! Should have turned off the computer I
