Try Mencoder (MPlayer)

mencoder dvd://1 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate="1200" -oac 
mp3lame -lameopts br=128 -o dvd.avi

You can see the man page for more options like zooming, scaling and 
subtitle stuffs.
