Bad hard drive or bad kernels ???

You mean fsck ?   Something runs about every 20 boots and it comes back
clean.  I haven't specifically run fsck.

HP HDX9494 aka Dragon.  T8100 processor, 4 GB RAM, 20" LCD, 2 SATA hard
drives, etc.
