Yes, I had loaded the enigmail addon and it did report that it was 
incompatible with build Linux_x86_64-gcc3. I did try a few of Nataraj's 
suggestions. I have not tried safe-mode yet. It is possible that the 
freeze is caused when it tries to do an imap sync with gmail, but that 
would be reported in the status line, and the status line is empty when 
it freezes. That is one of the things I always check on.
