F13 Firefox new tab issue

Did you try what I suggested:
Quit firefox
mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.save
start firefox and see how tabs behave.
if they still behave the same, then I
have no idea what may be causing it; go
ahead and
quit firefox,
rm -rf ~/.mozilla, and
mv ~/.mozilla.save ~/.mozilla
