Let's try to find out what the usb backend is actually up to.
Could you please run this command as root and attach the output?:
strace /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb 2>&1 | tail -n +200
It might be that you have something (perhaps the 'hp' backend?) using
libusb with the printer, preventing the usblp kernel module from getting
