MHow to modify keyboard map for the main console

I would like to modify the keymaps for 2 or 3 keys
on the main console (not under X server control).
How do I do that?
I know about xmodmap for modifying the keymaps
under X. I would like something similar for non X
controlled keyboard map.
Also, where are the keyboard keymaps stored?
