i never learned to use tar, as i was taught using 'find | cpio'.

not true. could be things are run a little different on this side of pond.

'find | cpio' was used by 5 admin's on mainframe systems that i did
equipment support on. numerous other admin's for mainframe that i know,
also used 'find | cpio' for backup.
