sounds like someone forgot to do his 'monthly house cleaning'.
when i first ran imap, once a week, i would use ftp to pull my inbox to a
local file, then delete inbox and upload a new inbox with the 'do not remove'
notice. next i would wipe my local record file. so i never had a large server
inbox file to be aware of any freezing. being that at that time i was on dial
up, i am sure i would have noticed.

may well be cured. i can imagine overhead in comparing local to server.
