What's up with bash shell and spaces in filenames? [SOLVED]

FYI.   I believe you can disable the alias associated  with a command  
by placing  '\' in front of it.     \cd will execute the basic command, 
ignoring the alias.  Please correct me if I'm missing a nuance.
