Properly wiping a hard drive ?

I have complained to Earthlink's technical support.  Answer:  Too bad.  
Our product is not designed for this use.  I'll keep on bashing on them 
as I don't accept that answer either as it breaks things in Thunderbird 
and Mac's own Mail program.
