Problem controlling display/screen with xorg.conf

Delete (or rename) the xorg.conf that you created, restart X (or
reboot the computer), let it boot into its default configuration, then
post the output of lspci (as root) and xrandr (as ordinary user)
commands. It also wouldn't hurt to post /var/log/Xorg.0.log from a
default running configuration (I guess that will be 1024x768).

The lspci command will tell us what video hardware you have. The
xrandr command will tell us what resolutions your hardware and your
driver supports. The Xorg.0.log will point us to any relevant
warnings/errors.

After you supply this info, maybe we can suggest a better driver for
your graphics card which supports more than 1024x768, and tell you how
to create a proper xorg.conf to make it work.
