OK, sounds like X.Org isn't happy. If you're sure that you don't have
an /etc/X11/xorg.conf already, you could try creating one for init 3:
X -configure

Does that create a config file?

If so, you can follow the instructions to try to run X with it, or
copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and boot runlevel 5.
