having recently gone through a similar problem, it was indeed GDM that 
was bombing - here's what got the machine to not use it:


    Adding to /modifying /etc/sysconfig/desktop so it contains these two 
lines:

    DESKTOP="KDE"
    DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"

this presumes that you have KDM installed, of course -
