Can't install nvidia drivers

Have you tried booting you machine with the nVidia drivers installed and
with an external monitor attached to your laptop?

I just installed the nVidia drivers on my Thinkpad T61 this week and had
to  play some games get the displays working correctly.  Not quite your
issue but no so dissimilar either.  Namely I had to tweak nvidia-xconfig
to recognize the laptop monitor and external monitor (via a docking
station) and overlay the X screens.  I had to disable twin-view as well.

Just a thought as all is now working well (nVidia wise) for me.
