I can assure you that a long time ago it was really plug-and-play.
Nowadays it is as you say; you have to modify the persistent-rules file
in etc to regain eth0. The good thing is that you can declare many
MAC addresses as eth0 and everything works if you do not plug them
together ("move the disks to secondary machine" scenario).
