You mean... XFCE? Or... LXDE? ... or Enlightenment (the one people claim 
is holy water)?

Gnome 3 will be rough as it is still under heavy development, but it 
should have a bright future. I am not using Gnome 2 as it is meant to be 
run (only 1 panel, Gnome shell-like setup) and have been doing so for 
over a year now.
