Firefox Gnome cannot "save as" to a new folder

you do not state, but tend to infer that this started after update.
yes/no/maybe?
anyway, if it works under kde and not under gnome, this indicates that
firefox's basic package is ok and problem is either gnome, or something
has changed in your gnome configs.
therefore, 2 things to do to see where:
1] create a new user, try firefox as new user from both kde and gnome.
2] install a new desktop, try firefox under new desktop.
results will tell you for sure where problem is.
