One last odd thing. Entries on the grub login menu read like something
like this:
Fedora (3.1.0-7.fc16.i686)
Fedora Linux, with Linux 3.1.0-7.fc16.i686
Fedora Linux, with Linux 3.1.0-7.fc16.i686 (Recovery Mode)
The first form of entries fails when selected; the last two work.
One last thing that may be worth noting is that the problem system is
running a system loaded from the Fedora LXDE spin (kernel upgraded once
successfully) while my other system is running the "main" Fedora release.
All very strange.
