No subtitle on VLC or SMplayer

As far I understand this is source build issue, so i can suggest you
install binary package at least for now, and if you have reason to
have source build, the later when you have a time to experiment,
rebuild it from souce, first with default ./configure, and then try
with differents options until it works as it should
