I have a similar camera:

    .[bobg at box9 ~]$ gphoto2 --auto-detect
    Model Port
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    [bobg at box9 ~]$ gphoto2 --auto-detect
    Model Port
    ----------------------------------------------------------
Nikon Coolpix S3100 (PTP mode) usb:008,002

    [bobg at box9 ~]$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303
    Serial Port
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 046d:c408 Logitech, Inc. Marble Mouse (4-button)
Bus 008 Device 002: ID 04b0:0320 Nikon Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I use gphoto2 with the following commands as required. From my notes:

    [bobg at box9 photosnew]$ gphoto2 --auto-detect

    [bobg at box9 photosnew]$ gphoto2 --summary

    [bobg at box9 photosnew]$ gphoto2 --list-files

    [bobg at box9 photosnew]$ gphoto2 --get-all-files

         Loads images into photosnew/

    [bobg at box9 digi-cam]$ gphoto2 --get-all-files --force-overwrite

Bob.
