Can't boot Linux after motherboard change

I talked with the Dell tech and he told me that in fact the heat sink he
did not put back was important,  The part has been ordered and hopefully it
will fix the problem.

I still don't know what Linux is doing during boot that causes it to power
the system off while Windows boots just fine.
