OK, so it does see your display.  That's good.

I couldn't get my laptop to recognize the external monitor without a
ctrl-alt-bksp to scan the monitors.  Now have a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and we can see what's happening.

Try a few things like

xrandr --auto --output VGA1 --same-as LVDS1
