Very amusing.  I, however, have a somewhat simpler theory  Many of the 
Gnome devs have odd little things that they think would be neat, or 
cool, and what we see is the result of what politicians call "log 
rolling:" that is, I'll vote for your plan of hiding the menus if you'll 
vote for my nifty scheme to assign new workspaces dynamically.
