Sorry for the delay in getting back as I had family visit descend upon 
my house.

I downloaded smplayer and gave it a test drive, works great ... many 
thanks for the recommendation.

I'm going to keep both vlc and smplayer on system and see if I ever hit 
a situation where one or the other doesn't work.
