Not all - there is a strong hint everything in the /root directory was
removed. The fix may be as simple as the copy he performed. If the systems
differ in any material ways, different things installed, he may have some
lingering problems with missing files in /root. I think these days the
missing files will tend to get recreated. So it might not be as bad as what
I faced in the late 90s from a corrupted /root directory in Hurricane. I
eventually solved it by reinstalling after incremental upgrades for a few
releases. Finally one didn't work and the reinstall made everything happy.

(I got screwed by an Adaptec SCSI controller that had a firmware glitch.
In a machine with both SCSI and IDE the IDE disk transfers would get
corrupted by the SCSI controller about once a megabyte. That rather shredded
the machine. I lacked disks so I repaired in place as best I could. It worked
"barely OK" for a fair amount of time until I bit the reinstall bullet. That
was a HARD bug to find. I'd whined enough here finally somebody recognized
the problem and suggested upgrading the Adaptec firmware. I hated unplugging
that puppy. I quite upgrading after awhile and kept hand updating files. It
had well over 400 hours of uptime when I finally shut it down - after too
moves powered by its UPS. I moved them together.)
