I tend to put quick hints for myself in there. It's grown rather dramatically
large over time.

If you ever use ssh, ftp, or other utilities from root they put data there.
If you receive log messages as root there may be some stuff in /root directory
as well. (Some system emails seem to default to root, even today. I put in
necessary redirections to the account that should see them - usually in the
various /etc configuration files.)
