One thought: is it important that you use TeX or just that you be able 
to format/typeset long documents, even books?  In the latter case, you 
might want to check out Scribus, a FOSS page layout program that's in 
use commercially to lay out magazines and books.  I can't tell if it 
fits your needs or not, but it may be worth checking out as it's in the 
repo.  (I know; today's update included both Scribus and its documentation.)
