Good thought here.  Going further, was it a fresh install or an upgrade, 
and if an upgrade, was F16 an upgrade or fresh install?  The reason I'm 
asking is that Fedora recently changed from starting user ID numbers 
with 500 to 1000, and there's a chance you might have been bit by it.
