Maybe if you had simply said what you meant that wouldn't have happened. 
  Instead, you responded in a rude and arrogant manner, refused to 
explain what you meant and (in short) acted like an asshole.  Let this 
be a learning experience about the value of courtesy and why you don't 
assume that your audience will always understand obscure things that you 
find obvious.
