I think based on the situation, Scientific Linux might be your best bet.
It has the label of "supported by CERN" and is effectively RHEL.  Your
boss need not know they share the same source rpms and are binary
compatible.

Just for completeness, I would like to emphasise Fedora is definitely
not the correct option; specially an unsupported release.
