It was using the HP LaserJet 1320 Foomatic/pxlmono driver, which is the  
marked as the recommended one by system-config-printer; and not the hpcups  
driver.

Switched the driver to the hpcups one, and, trying the PDF file again, it  
printed directly, with no fuss.
