"su -" in terminal hangs

 Is 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts?

the various .bash files in /root?  grep -i path .bash* in /root

If you CTRL-ALT-F3 to a new console, can you login as root?  That is, is
this a root problem or an su problem?
