        Found out this morning that I was missing the backends and 
libraries packages. I don't know how
simplescan can be installed without those as it will not work. It was 
installed as part of the basic
new installation 2 weeks ago. Should it not "depend" on the backends and 
libraries?

Whatever. Things now work fine...including scanimage -L :)
