I found out from the above conversation on the gnome mailing list that
the issue is with how X/gnome_shell handles the texture allocation and
it not playing nice with the limitations of Intel gen3 video hardware:

I haven't been able to get any response there, so I was hoping that
maybe someone on here could help. It appears that the per-crtc pixmaps
have been added, but is that functionality not being used by
X/gnome_shell yet? Or is there some way I have to manually turn that
on?
