Just a note of interest.  It seems there is a bit of inconsistency between Ubuntu releases/versions.  Today I installed 12.04 LTS + denyhosts.  The default denyhosts.conf contains

#
# Mac OS X (v10.3 or earlier):
#SECURE_LOG=/private/var/log/system.log
#
# Debian:
SECURE_LOG = /var/log/auth.log
