Firefox 23.0.1 on F18 64-bit: browse history is cleared on reboot

It shows the status (for /everything/ on the 'shutdown' page) as 
default, although I now have the box unticked; and what (recent) history 
I had has just survived an FF shutdown and restart.

I don't recollect losing history on earlier upgrades.  ??
