pulse is silent, alsa works, any hints for fixing pulse?

Curiously, if I do the pulse settings using the command
line pacmd tool, it works. It only gets screwed up when
I use either the gnome or the kde sound control GUI
to make what (as far as I know) should have been
the exact same setting.
