Hi Ed,
pm-is-supported does not output anything. Exit status is 0. To wit:

# pm-is-supported --suspend
# echo $?
0
# pm-is-supported --hibernate
# echo $?
0
# pm-is-supported --suspend-hybrid
# echo $?
0
#
