These days resize is typically online, regardless of LVM.

XFS volumes must be mounted to be grown. They can't be shrunk.

Btrfs volumes must be mounted to grow or shrink.

ext4 volumes can be either mounted or unmounted to grow, must be unmounted to shrink.
