hmm I have direct a btrfs filesystem on my ssd without partitions direct on /dev/sda. grub supports it, so I dont see a problem with that. And because u have subvolumes I dont see a reason to use partitions anymore. I think your suggestion sounds logical, but I am pretty shure that it worked in the past, but ok I am not 100% shure about that.
