You're a KDE user and quite a bit has changed. One question and one

Q. Just for information... Are you using kdm or sddm as your display
manager?

How does one find which display manager is being used?

Suggestion....

After reboot, login from a different machine and create a fresh user. Then
login as that new user to see if you have the same issue.

New in "xinit" output:

What is MTRR?
I assume that the error is not a good-thing.

Also, curiously, when I switch to graphical mode
  ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target
/etc/systemd/system/default.target
and then reboot....
hoping to get the graphicial login ... just to see if I can
pick the desktop there...
after the reboot the system has been set back to the
multi-user.target

Thanks
Richard
