While your in runlevel 3, try activating and testing the Magic SysRq 
Key: http://aplawrence.com/Words2005/2005_04_13.html and finding out 
just which combination of keys your Mobo responds to.  (Just use r 
because that one's harmless.)  Once you've got it working, create the 
file /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq as root, and put 1 in it so that it's active 
at boot.  Then, if it hangs again, you can use this to get a more 
orderly reboot by using this series of keystrokes, remembering to use 
the keys to activate the SysRq key each time: reisub  This will reset 
the keyboard to raw input, kill everything except init (the e and i 
commands) sync your disks, unmount all partitions and reboot.  This is 
slightly better than pulling the plug (and works on laptops without 
needing to pull the battery as well) because you won't have to worry 
about potential disk corruption.
