Oh, I forgot to mention....

If you use KDE there is currently a bug in "system settings".  If you set the individually set the locale for Time formats to C in the GUI it will actually set it LC_TIME=C.utf-8" or something like that which is non-existent and lead to several issues.

You need to set it in your .bashrc to get things right.
