If I may suggest an alternative. Why not use Emacs's own input methods?
I use it for Bengali, Hindi, and math symbols using TeX macros; it works
really great, even has quail completion support! I see there are 6
different input methods to choose from for Japanese, maybe one of them
fits your need?
You can change the input method by C-x RET C-\. You can find more info
about a specific input method with C-h C-\. See also the info node at
(info "(emacs)Input Methods").
