The VPN that the MIS department supports at work runs
six times slower than a forwarded ssh connection so the
only thing I ever use VPN for is getting my ssh forwarding
going if it happens to die in some way that doesn't automatically
recover :-).

I run x2go over the forwarded ssh connection to get my
work desktop to appear at home, and it is remarkably
fast.
