How to get rid of the gnome-sound-applet

This is exactly what disabling it in gnome-session-properties or
xfce4-session-settings does. You have been running in circles because
you removed the file to disable it. ;)

The question however is why it was started in first place. The global
autostart file /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-sound-applet.desktop contains
"OnlyShowIn=GNOME;". Did you have an old version of the file there or
did the personal autostart file overwrite this?
